The Walters Art Museum

Waltee's Quest - Online Learning Game

Over the past five years, The Walters and Planit have partnered to design and develop interactive solutions to promote the museum, arts, and culture. More recently, the museum came to us with the following challenge:

The Walters boasts collections spanning the centuries—how do you best engage a 5- to 8-year-old with art from Medieval Europe? Ancient Islam?

Our answer to this challenge? Time travel, of course! With close collaboration with The Walters, we were able to bring a concept to life that reflects the physical museum. Many children’s tours begin with a ride in a largely apportioned elevator, transporting visitors to different collections and time periods. Online, this elevator didn’t need to have boring buttons but could rather serve as a magic vessel to transfer children through space and time.

We conducted research with our youthful audience to reveal that Waltee, the museum lion-cub mascot, was undoubtedly the biggest draw in the museum. So we created a robust online game starring Waltee, where the children were called to action to help Waltee through a perilous adventure using the magic elevator.

Through usability testing, client collaboration, an engaging steam-punk design, and robust Flash animation, Planit was able to launch Waltee’s Quest in less than a year, with phenomenal results.
