E-Reader Jacket Customization Application

You’d have to be living under a rock to not know what an iPad is. Or a Kindle. Or a Nook. Or what e-readers are. For those of you not living under a rock, you are probably aware of the growing allegiances forming around these different devices. Lucky for M-Edge—the leading provider of e-reader accessories—they have a stylish cover, jacket or accessory for all of them. M-Edge’s good name in this space has earned them big-time coverage in national publications such as InStyle; O, The Oprah Magazine; People; Wired; CNET; Gizmodo; and even the Today Show.

So, how do you give a company that provides every shape, size, and color of e-reader jacket a leg up over its competitors? You put the design in the hands of the customer. Enter: MyEdge.

M-Edge had the benefit of being in the e-reader game since 2006 (as a frame of reference, the first Kindle came out in 2007). So being first to market is nothing new to them. Once again looking forward, they saw a future in product customization.

M-Edge turned to Planit to help engineer an online application that allows customers to bring their design chops to the table. Whether mom wants a collage of family photos or young Billy wants to wreak havoc using colors, patterns, and personalized graphics—the canvas becomes theirs to explore and make their own.

To bring this to life, Planit owned the challenge of engineering a product-customization application to be deeply embedded into M-Edge's e-commerce site as well as the company's complex manufacturing process. On top of this robust development lives an intuitive user-experience. Planit designed and developed a Flash interface that used universal iconography and clear messaging for users not versed in art programs like Photoshop or Illustrator to feel comfortable navigating through the application’s feature set. Using simple image uploading functionality, a custom text editor, drag-and-drop features, and different scaling tools, MyEdge puts the “custom” in customer.

The built-in 3-D rendering view assures a customer that their masterpiece looks as desired before adding it to their shopping cart. If users are confident in their design skills, they can add their custom designs to the Style Library—a Planit-architected gallery of MyEdge jacket submissions. The Style Library truly lets someone judge a book by its cover with its user-voting capabilities and sorting functions based on “Top-Voted,” “Featured,” and M-Edge categories. See a custom design you like? Buy it from the Style Library.
