What’s your name again?

Do you often forget names when you first meet people? The second I get introduced to someone new in a social setting I immediately forget their name. Why? I swear I pay attention and am thoroughly interested. It just instantly escapes me when I start the conversation. So how can we stop this from happening? Lucky for me (and you) there are plenty of tips and tricks out there to save us from embarrassment moving forward. I’ve searched high and low and asked a small group their best techniques and here is what they said: Repeat back their name once after they have introduced themselves. “Hey, Jim, it’s nice to meet you!” Comment on their name. “Oh, your name is Jess? That’s my mom’s name, too!” Of course, only employ this technique if it’s true to avoid awkward situations in the future. Use mnemonic devices. “Becky is a blonde from Baltimore.” Write it down. Just don’t be obvious when you are doing so. Speak up if you didn’t hear it the first time. “I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you. Did you say your name is Kacey?” Download an app such as Namerick, MemFriends, or Evernote Hello. Remember to do this before you go to a meeting or social event. What’s your best technique for remembering someone’s name?
