Baltimore City Anti-Litter Campaign

Think litter just looks bad? Think again. It's an incessant problem that starts small and can ultimately aid in the breakdown of neighborhoods, which leads to the infiltration of drugs, which leads to widespread homicides.

No, really.

In an effort to combat the specific issues that litter creates, the City of Baltimore selected Planit to craft a social marketing campaign to change the public's perception of littering and the 'harmless' behaviors that add to it. This campaign was never meant for gross offenders (the ones who drop their McDonald's bags out the window at the stoplight—those folks are too far gone to try to change). This is all about getting to responsible folks who just don't realize what they're doing sometimes. Every great journey starts with one small step, right?

  • Cleaner Greener Baltimore

It all started with a tagline. But not just a tagline, an attitude. One that said, stop being a jerk and be a part of the solution. After all, Baltimore is a great town, but it ain't Nantucket. It has its problems. And those problems aren't going away by being all nicey-nicey.

  • Paper Cup

That paper cup you left at the bus stop? That sucks, girl.

  • Butts

Hey buddy, gum and cigarette butts are litter, too.

  • Crabs

Baltimore loves its blue crabs. At least we thought we did.

  • Calories

    Picking up litter is sexy.

  • Hit 'em where it hurts.

Want to make a big point? Forget roadside billboards and put the message on the trucks that travel up and down the dirtiest, dingiest places in the city: the alleyways where irresponsible litter and trash habits live (along with some huge rats).

  • Truck Billboard 1

One of the many garbage truck billboards we did.

  • Truck Billboard 2

Another one of the many garbage truck billboards we did.

  • Truck Billboard 3

Still another of the many garbage truck billboards we did.

  • Trashcans Speak

Those cylindrical things on street corners you keep ignoring? Yeah, they're called trashcans and they're sick and tired of being ignored.

  • Greatest to Greenest

Baltimore's officially unofficial slogan is 'The greatest city in America.' It must be true, since it's printed on every damn park and bus stop bench in the city. We created stickers that changed things up a bit. A little stealthy peel-and-stick action and voila! The Greatest City in America becomes The Greenest City in America.
